About the Item

Cantilever side chair in the style of Marcel Breuer's D41 design, produced by Tecta. The chair features a black painted tubular steel sled frame with a continuous curved profile and a woven plastic cord seat and back. The woven shell flows from seat to back in a single gently curved form, with a rounded top edge and dense, even weave throughout. The D41 design follows the Bauhaus-era cantilever form developed by Breuer in the late 1920s, combining industrial steel framing with natural seating materials. Tecta, the German manufacturer, has produced licensed reproductions of Bauhaus classics including the D41, making them among the more reputable sources for these designs in post-war production. The chair shows wear consistent with age and use. Note: the seating support bar underneath is missing.

Set of Four Tecta D41-Style Cantilever Chairs by Marcel Breuer

Set of Four Tecta D41-Style Cantilever Chairs by Marcel Breuer

By Marcel Breuer

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Set of four cantilever side chairs produced by Tecta, following the D41 design developed by Marcel Breuer in the late 1920s. Each chair features a chrome tubular steel sled frame supporting a woven synthetic seat and back shell. The open basket-weave pattern in black synthetic material forms a continuous curved shell from seat to back, sitting atop the signature C-form cantilever base with small rubber feet. Breuer developed the cantilever chair concept at the Bauhaus, drawing on the structural principle that a continuous steel tube, properly tensioned, could replace the traditional rear legs entirely. The D41 became one of the definitive expressions of this idea, pairing the industrial clarity of the steel frame with a woven seat and back that softened the chair's structural rigor. Tecta, the German manufacturer, has long produced Bauhaus-lineage furniture...
