About the Item
The "Culbuto" armchair, designed by Marc Held in 1967, is a manifesto piece of French design from the 1960s, combining formal and architectural innovation with a playful spirit.
Inspired by roly-poly toys, the chair is set in a shell of polyester reinforced with fiberglass — which, at the time, was a new and unknown material, that allowed for unprecedented, freer, and resolutely curved forms. Its seamless hemispherical silhouette rocks gently before naturally returning to an upright balance, turning the simple act of sitting into a dynamic experience.
Halfway between sculpture and functional object, the "Culbuto" chair embodies the utopian impulse of an era when design, freed from traditional constraints, explored new relationships between the body, movement, and space.
