About the Item

This beautiful easy chair is the Danish interpretation of the classic British upholstered seating style, the Chesterfield. Considering its structural, material and visual qualities, this easy chair is the perfect illustration of why Danish mid-century design is still beloved. Once seen as the sofa or chair of choice for the sherry-in-the-library set, this style is now a fresh, elegant way to bring a sense of solidity and tradition to a modern room. The classic markings of the modern chesterfield style are tufted buttons, and arms and back of the same height. This Danish easy chair keeps the main traditional elements of the classic style, but combines it with the Danish ideals of understated design and functionality. The rolled armrests extend to the whole back which unifies the design. The tufted buttons and stitches very subtly section the chair and give it a structure that prevents the upholstery from overpowering the design. Instead, the premium bouclé and the distinctive curvilinear shapes accentuate each other. The twisted wool fibres are incredibly durable, and the fabric brings an additional layer of interest to this sofa and to any space. The chair is supported by four short, stained beech legs that are slightly splayed and mirror the proportions of the body. The Danish design idiom, among other things, was centred on gentle yet robust support for the spine - a quality that engender contentment and well-being, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. The visual appearance however, is not the only thing that echoes Danish design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body. Condition: In good vintage condition.
