About the Item

The 1956 Drawn chair by Hvidt & Mølgaard stands out as a definitive piece of Danish design. Relying upon traditional craftsmanship techniques and built out of organic materials, it brings a sense of wholesome honesty to any space. It comes in two versions: a wider model with arm rests, or one without. The chair is made from turned and milled solid wood with a form-pressed backrest. The seat is hand-woven from more than 100 meter natural paper cord. Material: Black Lacquered Oak & natural paper cord Dimensions: H: 78cm/30.7in, W: 59cm/19.3in, D: 56cm/18.1in, Seat Height: 46cm/18.1in, Seating Depth: 49cm/16.5in. Armrest Height: 69cm/27.2in Disclaimer: Made-to-Order Policy: As this piece is handcrafted specifically for you upon request, please be advised that all sales are final. We are unable to accept cancellations once the order is confirmed and production has begun. Designed By Hvidt & Mølgaard Renowned for the simplicity and craftsmanship of their designs, Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) met Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993) at Kunsthåndværkerskolens Snedkerskole, where he began first as his student and later taught alongside him. The two formed an instant, close friendship, moving on to experience their first success as a design duo after entering and winning the 1943 Swedish Slöjdföreningen's competition. Renowned for the simplicity of their works, the duo established a simple and precise aesthetic designing countless pieces of furniture over the years, many of which became icons of the era. The success of the AX chair (crafted in 1950) was a seminal moment for the pair. Not only did its smooth, tightly controlled silhouette secure their stance as leaders of Danish modernism, but the use of laminated wood allowed the chair to be produced on a mass scale and exported internationally. This forward-thinking approach to industrialized production paved the way for a new movement that drew upon classical craftsmanship techniques to make affordable, beautifully crafted home furnishings.
