About the Item

We are pleased to offer this distinctive Mid-Century Modern folding chair, a refined interpretation of the iconic Italian Renaissance Savonarola chair. The Savonarola chair, itself derived from the ancient Roman sella curulis (curule seat), is celebrated for its ingenious folding structure, portability, and sculptural elegance. Characterized by a series of intersecting wooden elements arranged in an X-shaped scissor configuration, this timeless design has remained relevant for centuries and was historically employed not only in domestic interiors but also in military and campaign furniture due to its practicality and ease of transport. The chair offered here faithfully reinterprets these historic principles through a modern lens. Minimalist, lightweight, and exceptionally easy to fold and store, it embodies the functional sophistication that has made the Savonarola form an enduring design classic. Although the designer remains unknown, the chair's restrained aesthetic, elegant proportions, and clean-lined armrests evoke the work of celebrated Italian designers Afra and Tobia Scarpa. Crafted from solid beechwood, recently restored by a professional furniture conservator, it showcases the natural beauty of the wood grain, which serves as the piece's sole ornamentation. The seat and backrest are upholstered in raw ecru cotton canvas, perfectly complementing the chair's organic character and understated craftsmanship. The combination of warm beechwood and natural textile creates a timeless, sculptural presence that works equally well in Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, Wabi-Sabi, Rustic Contemporary, or Minimalist interiors. Recently restored and structurally sound, the chair remains in very good vintage condition, displaying only minor signs of age consistent with its history and use.

The "Sgarsul" rocking chair is a reinterpretation of Thonet's 1862 N1 cantilever armchair by Gae Aulenti, a leading architect and designer of Italian design.
