About the Item

The Smoke Dining Chair, designed by Maarten Baas for Moooi, is one of the most recognisable and influential pieces of contemporary Dutch design. Part of Baas's celebrated Smoke collection, each chair begins as a traditionally crafted wooden seat before being carefully charred using a controlled burning process. The scorched timber is then stabilised with a clear epoxy resin, preserving the dramatic texture and deep black finish while ensuring long-term durability. Blending classical craftsmanship with conceptual design, the chair retains the elegant silhouette and carved ornamentation of an 18th-century Rococo dining chair while transforming it into a striking contemporary work of functional art. The black leather upholstered seat and backrest provide a refined contrast to the richly textured burnt timber, offering exceptional comfort alongside its sculptural appearance. Equally suited as a standalone statement piece or as part of a dining set, the Smoke chair has become an icon of modern collectible design and is represented in numerous private and public collections worldwide.
