About the Item

A refined set of six dining chairs designed by Melchiore Bega in Italy during the 1950s. These chairs are a clear expression of Bega’s pursuit of elegance and balance, combining sculptural detail with functional comfort. The sharply profiled legs, sometimes described as spikey in form, rise upward with precision and connect seamlessly to the seat, creating an architectural silhouette that is both striking and graceful. The wooden frames are finished with brass-capped feet, a subtle yet luxurious detail that enhances their refined presence. The white upholstered seats, reupholstered some time ago, remain in good condition and provide comfortable support, making the set perfectly suited for daily use as well as for sophisticated dining settings. The frames retain their original patina, with gentle signs of age that attest to their authenticity and mid-century character. This set of six not only functions as practical seating but also stands as an ensemble that embodies the refined craftsmanship and aesthetic ideals of Italian postwar design. The dialogue between the angular wooden frames and the soft upholstered seats results in a timelessly elegant composition. The chairs are priced and sold in a set of 6. Melchiore Bega (1898–1976) was one of Italy’s most influential architects and designers of the 20th century. After training at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, he established himself as a prominent figure in modern Italian design, directing the renowned furniture manufacturer Bega in Bologna. His career spanned architecture, interior design, and furniture, with projects ranging from private villas to public buildings and luxury hotels. Bega’s furniture designs are celebrated for their refinement, architectural clarity, and sensitivity to proportion, making his work highly sought after by collectors of Italian modernism today. As with all our upholstered pieces, these can be custom reupholstered to suit your preferences. Consult with our experienced upholstery department for a personalized quote on customizing the item of your choice. We can work with fabric you provide or order specific materials to meet your needs. Throughout the reupholstery process, we prioritize preserving the originality of the piece to ensure it retains its value and is ready for many more years of use.

Augusto Bozzi Ariston dining chairs Saporiti Italy 1954

Augusto Bozzi Ariston dining chairs Saporiti Italy 1954

By Saporiti, Augusto Bozzi

Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant

Highly rare and beautiful set of 6 so called ‘Ariston’ dining chairs designed by Augusto Bozzi and manufactured by Saporiti, Italy 1954. These chairs have a pressed plywood seat which is finished with teak veneer at the front and back, the black painted metal wire frame supports the seats. The structure provides stability and also a nice contrast with the deep coloured plywood seats. The seats are only connected to the base with 2 screws which are decoratively worked away in the seat, but these details also support the aesthetics of the design. This style was popular in the 1950s. Bozzi was one of the designers who gained credits for his designs during that period, putting Saporiti on the map and becoming one of the big players...
