About the Item

Beautiful Set of 4 Chiavarine chairs 3 slats model. These extremely light chairs were designed by the Levaggi brothers in the 1950s in Chiavari, Italy. The chairs feature a structure in polished and red-stained beech wood with the seat in hand-woven cane and bamboo leaf rope. Both the structure and the materials are simply amazing, complemented by the precise decoration that testifies to perfect symmetry. A fantastic set that will brighten and add elegance to a midcentury porch or a modern living room. The passion that unites the three generations of the Levaggi Brothers is pure and simple: shaping wood with your own hands. The creativity of the young is channeled by the experience and knowledge of the elders, who guide the process from cutting the tree to assembling and painting the individual components. They work with a variety of woods that are part of the ancient tradition of the Chiavari chair and leave very few steps in the process to modern machinery, favoring a human evaluation and manual approach to ensure high quality and attention to detail. Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi (1767-1855) was a Genoese furniture maker, best known as the inventor of the Chiavari chair. Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi was born in Chiavari in the Republic of Genoa in 1767, the son of a cooper. He was called "il Campanino" ("the bell ringer") because his grandfather was the bell ringer of the church of Bacezza. Descalzi was apprenticed to one of the best shipwrights in Chiavari, and became a master craftsman himself. In 1795 the Descalzi brothers opened a furniture workshop. In 1796 he received a silver medal for two wooden chests of drawers from the Economic Society of Chiavari, founded five years earlier by the Marquis Stefano Rivarola. Descalzi introduced the use of a smooth slab of San Giacomo slate as a table top, a low-cost alternative to marble. In 1807 Rivarola challenged Descalzi to design a new and modern chair based on a chair he had brought back from Paris. Descalzi has created a simple, practical and elegant design for a cherry chair. The chairs are both light and sturdy. Descalzi has exploited traditional knowledge, paid great attention to quality and developed new production techniques. Chairs with the "Chiavarine" design became extremely popular and were bought by many monarchs of the time. Descalzi's furniture designs have won numerous medals at exhibitions. His sons Emanuele and Giacomo and their descendants continued the chair industry he had founded. Many other factories opened in Chiavari and neighboring towns, and some still continue to produce furniture today.
