About the Item

Pair of rustic Swedish munkstolar, or monk’s chairs, ca. 1910-1920. Their three legged design has its origins in the medieval monasteries of Northern Europe where it was considered a humble chair for a meditative life. During the arts and crafts era of the early 20th century however, the form was revived in the gothic manner and examples such as these are often crafted in oak with traditional Scandinavian chip carvings.
