About the Item

With simplicity of form and balanced proportions, this antique Chinese daybed from the mid-19th century recalls the austere beauty of Ming-dynasty furniture design. The large daybed has a soft rattan top woven to a simple twill pattern and set within a richly aged elmwood frame. Devoid of carvings or embellishment, the minimal frame rests on short corner legs that end in hoof feet and connect to the sides with pleasing curves. Known as "ta," this style of low-lying daybed was used throughout the courtyard home as a portable surface for reclining, playing games, and gathering for food and drink. The wooden step is finished with dark lacquer, now lightly worn along the edges with rich texture. Today, we love this low step as a tabletop display stand or a footstool beside a plush armchair...
