About the Item

Set of six hand-carved Brutalist dining chairs manufactured by Aquarius Enterprises in 1970s South Africa. Each chair features solid wood construction with thick slab-like elements forming a cantilever-style frame. The distinctive double arched backs create sculptural openings, with hand-carved cultural motifs integrated into the central panels—geometric patterns and figurative designs that echo the decorative aesthetic of Evelyn Ackerman's work. The cantilever construction employs wide wood planks joined to form sturdy supports, with horizontal stretchers providing additional stability. Original beige cushioned seats offer comfort while maintaining the chairs' architectural presence. Each piece is stamped on the underside with the Aquarius Enterprises manufacturer's mark, documenting their South African origin. Shows wear consistent with age and use.

Set Of Six 1970s French Oak Brutalist Dining Chairs With Upholstered Seats

Located in High Point, NC

This set of six 1970s French oak Brutalist dining chairs presents a striking balance of sculptural form and honest craftsmanship. Defined by their strong ladder-back construction and rectilinear silhouettes, each chair emphasizes solid proportions and architectural clarity typical of the Brutalist movement. The richly toned oak frames display pronounced grain and a warm, natural patina that enhances their tactile presence. Upholstered seats in a neutral fabric soften the bold structure while providing comfortable support for everyday dining. Substantial legs and simple stretcher bases reinforce the chairs’ sturdy construction and utilitarian appeal. Graphic yet versatile, this cohesive set works beautifully in rustic, modern, or eclectic interiors, offering a confident statement at the dining table while celebrating the raw materials and functional design language of 1970s French Brutalist furniture.
