About the Item

A regal pair of French side chairs from the Directoire period (circa 1795-1800). The chairs have chalk-white painted frames now patinated to fine craquelure texture softening the symbolic, Neoclassical imagery carved in the back. Within the thick handrail one sees a stylized Greco-Roman urn framed by a diamond-shaped outline. In the splat is a (pierced) anthemion motif flanked by columns. Slender tapered front legs and sabered back legs have both order and a sense of lightness to fit anywhere. Wide, flat seats are currently upholstered in a dark green velvet over natural stuffing. One chair has worn through to expose the horsehair underneath. We believe these items to be in good antique condition considering their age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Please view the detailed image gallery for the current condition and message us with any questions. Sold as a pair.
