About the Item

A dining chair with the legs in solid polished beech wood and the seat in multilayer beech wood. The padding is in multi-density polyurethane foam. The backrest structure is in curved aluminium. The saddle leather covering is available in various colors with the option of having matching piping for the backrest, available in various shades. Bar stool with adjustable height thanks to a spring mechanism, with base structure in satin finished steel. The structure of the seat is in multilayer and the padding is in multi-density expanded polyurethane. The structure of the backrest is in curved aluminium. The covering is in saddle leather, which is available in different colors while the backrest can be matched to different shades of piping. About the designer: Massimo Scolari Graduate of architecture in Milan in 1969. 1973 saw him become professor of The History of Architecture in Palermo, and of Drawing at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV). He won an associate fellowship in 1983 and a full fellowship in 1986. His studies on representation were published by Marsilio in “Il Disegno obliquo” (2005). Between 1975 and 1993 he was Visiting Professor in various universities among which: Cornell University, Cooper Union N.Y., Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies N.Y., Technische Universita¨t Vienna, Harvard University, Cambridge. From 2006, he became Davenport Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture. Editor of “Controspazio”, “Casabella”, “Lotus International”, director of “Eidos” (1989 - 1995) and the series of architectural books by Franco Angeli (1973-1988). From 1989 he designed furniture for Giorgetti where he was also the art director until 2001. He has held exhibitions in Europe, Japan, Russia and the United States. His works are permanently on show at the MoMa (New York), at the Teheran Museum of Contemporary Art, at the Deutsches Architektur Museum (Frankfurt) and at the Centre Pompidou (Paris). He realized installations for the Venice Biennale 1980, 1984, 1991, 1996, and 2004 and at the Milan Triennials in 1973 and 1986. In 2001 he resigned from the university. He gained a pilot’s license in the same year. In 2007 Skira has published a monograph on the occasion of his personal exhibition at the Civic Museum in Riva del Garda. He lives in Venice.

Massimo Scolari

In his role as art director and furniture designer for Italian furniture brand Giorgetti, architect, educator and painter Massimo Scolari spent over a decade producing so many imaginative, sculptural postmodern pieces that it’s easy to lose count. The Novi Ligure native has always had an eye for good design — he is an equally acclaimed painter with works in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, and has taught at Harvard University, Cornell University and the University of Cambridge.

In 1969, Scolari completed his studies in architecture and became a professor in 1973. He taught architecture history in Palermo and drawing at Venice’s Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia. From 1975 onward, Scolari was a visiting professor at many of the world’s top universities for nearly three decades while creating numerous installations for the La Biennale di Venezia and Milan Triennial.

Among Scolari’s notable furniture designs are the solid beechwood Spring swivel armchair, which is characterized by organic curves and has a backrest that features ebony insets, as well as the Erasmo and Zeno writing desks. Each piece offers innovative flourishes — the hidden spring in his armchair allows the sitter to lean back comfortably, which lends an unusual level of flexibility to the modern wooden seat, while his sleek writing desks are often outfitted with hidden drawers or secret pull-out compartments.

Scolari has exhibited across the United States. and Europe as well as in Russia and Japan. A retrospective of his work that featured over 100 paintings, drawings and architectural models was staged at the Cooper Union in 2012. For his distinct and creative contributions to architecture, Scolari was awarded the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York in 2014.
