About the Item

Limited Edition Shades of Michelangelo Chair in Aluminum by Toshiki Omatsu. Limited Edition. Dimensions: W 44 x D 44 x H 88 cm. Materials: Metal (Aluminum) and wood (Hard Maple). The chair design fuses warm maple wood with a cold metal surface to create a simple form and an intriguing connection between natural and man-made materials. The design comes from the question ‘what if the back plate is deformed according to one’s leaning on it backward?’ The back plate, the sheet and the partial front legs are made out of a single aluminum sheet with a thickness of 3mm, bent to the form. The partial front legs of the aluminum work not only for the design but also for structural strength, as there are no joints between the chair legs. The metal used for the seat and back plate of the chair harnesses new technology, which is more typically reserved for architectural façades, called ‘incremental forming’. It is a cutting edge technology and has been developed by a cooperative Japanese company, Kikukawa Kogyo Co., Ltd., is a dieless metalworking process that is suitable for small productions of a wide variety of products. About the artist These are experimental art-furniture products using aluminum. With the keyword "Aluminum x Technology beyond Art & Design", I try to overcome the boundary between art and design by using aluminum, which is a renewable material, and applying cutting-edge metal processing technology, rather than simply pursuing the beauty of form and functionality. Toshiki Omatsu is a Tokyo-based, Japanese designer, born in 1973, and is a member of Architectural Institute of Japan. He graduated from Kyoto Institute of Technology, Architecture & Design (B. Arch.) in 1996, and took a Diploma in The Berlage Institute, Amsterdam in The Netherland with Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, Overseas Study Grant in 1999. After working in a several architecture offices in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, he opened his own studio called “Toshiki Omatsu Atelier” in 2005 to design architecture, furniture and products, and has won a several competitions in Japan. He is currently a director of Space design department at a famous design school called “Kuwasawa design school” in Tokyo. Since 2019, he has been energetically designing furniture aimed "Art x Technology", especially using aluminum.
