About the Item

Rare set of eight high back side Chiavari ebonized dining chairs, by Ezio Minotti in 1955. Ebonized wood, white velvet fabric Very good condition Measures: 50cm x 40 cm, height: 132 cm, height seat: 47 cm. rehupolstery in white velvet this model, very known it takes up the typical model of Chiavari chairs On 1807 Mr Descalzi a skilled cabinetmaker from Chiavari, made the first prototype He created the first chair, later called the "chiavarina," which differed greatly in shape and detail from Buffa's. This chair quickly became famous throughout Europe and continued to be called the "chiavarina." It was appreciated by the great European rulers from Napoleon III onward. In the 19th-century version, one of its features was the cane seat. But the fundamental characteristic was to combine lightness and sturdiness. In the post-World War II boom in Italian design, the most important Italian designers, from Gio Ponti to Guglielmo Ulrich, and even Paolo Buffa, created their own versions of the so-called Chiavarina chair. Gio Ponti created probably the most famous version in the 1950s, later known as the "superleggera," and various versions of the superleggera. Ponti himself created versions with cane or fabric seats. Paolo Buffa also created a version, like the one I'm selling, for important residences in the 1950s with fabric seats. An exquisite, iconic, and renowned Italian side chairs, characterized by their clean lines, they were crafted between 1950 and 1955 by skilled artisans in the city of Chiavari, Italy, who were inspired by the style of renowned Italian designer Paolo Buffa. The artisans faithfully followed a two-century-old production technique; they selected beech wood from the Ligurian hinterland, cutting it according to specific characteristics such as the season and the lunar phase. The chairs are then seasoned using strictly natural methods, taking two to five years. The actual crafting process begins only when the wood is perfectly dried and is carried out using manual machinery. Some components are hand-turned with a level of finish unmatched by any industrial machine. Finally, the chairs are meticulously hand-finished until even the smallest imperfections are eliminated. The finished product is the culmination of these undeniable qualities, an artistic expression that combines elegance, lightness, perfect finishes, and surprising sturdiness. A curious fact: Chiavari artisans claim that one of their chairs can be lifted with just the little finger, yet can be used daily without fear. In Chiavari, a distinguished school of furniture craftsmen was already flourishing during the golden age of the Republic of Genoa. The history of the "Chiavari artistic chairs" began in 1796, when the Economic Society (a group of noble intellectuals) challenged the city's furniture makers to develop new forms. These first chairs were created in the early 1800s by Gaetano Descalzi, known as "il Campanino," a name that still today identifies the oldest model from which the "Chiavari" typology developed. Thus were born the chairs known throughout the world for their essential form, combined with their characteristic lightness and durability. The most important Italian designers were influenced by and created prototypes in Chiavari: Paolo Buffa, Guglielmo Ulrich, and Gio Ponti. The latter two continued production in Brianza. Paolo Buffa (born 1903 in Milan and died 1970 in Milan) was an Italian furniture designer who defined his unique aesthetic and became one of the most sought-after Italian designers of his time. Buffa excelled in creating high-quality pieces that appealed to the affluent clientele of the time.
