About the Item

A characterful set of four French rustic dining chairs, dating from approximately the 1950s or 1960s. The chairs feature tall ladder backs, distinctive rounded knop finials and traditional handwoven rush seats. The frames are made from solid wood, most likely oak or beech, with a warm naturally aged patina. Their simple construction, elongated uprights and visible joinery give the chairs a strong architectural and handcrafted character. The design reflects the French postwar interest in regional furniture, vernacular craftsmanship and natural materials. These chairs combine particularly well with furniture in the spirit of Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Chapo, Guillerme et Chambron, Jean Touret and the Artisans de Marolles, Audoux-Minet and Olavi Hänninen. They are not attributed to these designers, but share the same appreciation for solid wood, functional construction and rustic modernism. The set works well around a French farmhouse table, monastery table or sculptural brutalist dining table. Suitable for rustic modern, French provincial, wabi-sabi, Mediterranean, Belgian-style and mid-century interiors. The chairs retain their original vintage character, with variations in colour, light surface wear, marks and small irregularities to the wood. The rush seats show normal age-related wear but appear intact and usable. Structurally, the chairs appear sound, though all vintage seating should be inspected before intensive daily use. Sold as a set of four.
