About the Item

Set of four dining chairs produced by Heinrich Spahn of Büren, Germany in the 1980s, designed in the Memphis style inspired by the work of Ettore Sottsass. Each chair features a light wood frame with a rounded horseshoe-shaped crest rail that terminates in cylindrical knob ends. Four black-painted spindles fan outward from a central lower point to meet the curve of the back rail, creating a distinctive triangular arrangement. Upholstered seats are covered in a warm gray woven fabric. Heinrich Spahn was a West German furniture manufacturer active during the 1970s and 1980s, producing pieces that reflected the design sensibilities of the era. These chairs draw clearly from the Memphis Group aesthetic that emerged from Milan in the early 1980s under Sottsass, translating its graphic, high-contrast visual language into a more production-ready German format. The contrast between the light wood and black spindles is characteristic of that movement's interest in bold material opposition. The set shows wear consistent with age and use and remains in original condition.
