About the Item

A set of six English Regency dining chairs from the early nineteenth century, with rattan seats and backs set within finely proportioned wooden frames. The design reflects the Regency period’s interest in refined construction, lightness and decorative restraint, as well as the wider fascination with Asian-inspired furniture forms in early nineteenth-century Britain. The Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire is one of England’s most historically significant country houses and has long been the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire. A Chatsworth Estate label indicates that the chairs were likely part of the furnishings of the house or one of its associated interiors. The provenance connects the set to one of Britain’s most important collecting families, whose holdings have included furniture, works of art and decorative objects assembled over several centuries.
