Restored Witco Conquistador Tiki Throne Chairs in Original Red Fur

By Witco, William Westenhaver / Witco

Located in Chattanooga, TN

Pair of restored Witco Conquistador tiki throne chairs in original red fur. These chairs are absolutely wild in the best kind of way. The original red fur fabric has a thick pile. This bright red upholstery adds drama to the high-back, iron cladded, hand-carved throne. As if all that isn’t enough.. the arms are carved like gorilla paws. Each throne chair is crowned with two hand-carved conquistador heads donning their iconic helmets. These highly collectible and hard-to-find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture. We have four of these chairs available, two arm chairs and two armless chairs. This listing is for just the two armchairs. The two armless chairs are sold separate. We also have the matching dining table, sold separate. We have other Witco items available including conquistador chairs in new leopard upholstery, Witco end table, and Witco cat...

Vintage Witco Tiki King Throne Hand-Carved Highback Chairs in Faux Leopard Fur

By William Westenhaver / Witco, Witco

Located in Chattanooga, TN

Take a walk on the wild side, or maybe just have a seat there with scepter in hand. Each chair has been recovered in high-quality, cruelty free, faux-fur that very much resembles the look and feel of leopard fur. Adorned top to bottom with hand-carved intricate detail. These highly collectible and hard to find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture. This project was a complete tear-down and rebuild. Every section was unbolted and individually restored. This sinuous, dark cedar has been painstakingly detailed by our in-house restoration team to both preserve the patina and address any imperfections in the wood. Lightly recolored and clear-coated to accentuate and preserve the character. The seats and backs were professionally reupholstered, and the results speak for themselves. We're more than certain these will exceed expectations. Robert Post Junior and Artist William Westenhaver Created Witco in 1959. The two capitalized on the exotica trend by creating lavishly bold, roughly carved wood furniture and decor. The delightfully dramatic furniture was so beloved during the period that Elvis created an entire “Jungle Room” in his Graceland home featuring Witco furniture! Witco remains a mainstay among collectors today. You can even see original Witco pieces still in use at Graceland, and other iconic tiki venues like Polynesian Gardens, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Aku Tiki Inn all located in Florida. We have other Witco items available including a pair of these conquistador chairs with arms, Witco cat...

Pair of WITCO Tiki Swivel Lounge Chairs

By William Westenhaver / Witco

Located in Hanover, MA

Tiki chic pair of barrel back swivel lounge chairs designed by William Westenhaver with tropical inspired carved cedar and textured velvet upholstery. Chairs have a recessed carved wood square plinth under which is an unseen round swivel platform base, enabling 360 degree rotation. Very clean examples ready to place. Westenhaver's WITCO (Western International Trading Co.) literally changed the face of tiki with its Avant Garde carving style. His rough, chunky, loose, abstract shapes stood in stark contrast to the smooth and sleek style that dominated earlier 20th century design. Westenhaver's company, Witco, was founded in Mount Vernon, Washington in 1959 and operated for 20 years. His furniture and carvings were sold coast-to-coast, reaching their zenith when Elvis famously furnished his Jungle Room at Graceland entirely with Witco. William Westenhaver spent some time carving for hotels and restaurants in Florida; his pieces can still be found at Polynesian Gardens, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Aku Tiki Inn. A Witco fountain provided the logo and souvenir tiki mug...

Antique and Vintage Lounge Chairs for Sale: Wassily Chairs, Eames Chairs and Other Celebrated Seats

While this specific seating is known to all for its comfort and familiar form, the history of how your favorite antique or vintage lounge chair came to be is slightly more ambiguous.

Although there are rare armchairs dating back as far as the 17th century, some believe that the origins of the first official “lounge chair” are tied to Hungarian modernist designer-architect Marcel Breuer. Sure, Breuer wasn’t exactly reinventing the wheel when he introduced the Wassily lounge chair in 1925, but his seat was indeed revolutionary for its integration of bent tubular steel.

Officially, a lounge chair is simply defined as a “comfortable armchair,” which allows for the shape and material of the furnishings to be extremely diverse. Whether or not chaise longues make the cut for this category is a matter of frequent debate.

The Eames lounge chair, on the other hand, has come to define somewhat of a universal perception of what a lounge chair can be. Introduced in 1956, the Eames lounger (and its partner in cozy, the ottoman) quickly became staples in television shows, prestigious office buildings and sumptuous living rooms. Venerable American mid-century modern designers Charles and Ray Eames intended for it to be the peak of luxury, which they knew meant taking furniture to the next level of style and comfort. Their chair inspired many modern interpretations of the lounge — as well as numerous copies.

On 1stDibs, find a broad range of unique lounge chairs that includes everything from antique Victorian-era seating to vintage mid-century modern lounge chairs by craftspersons such as Hans Wegner to contemporary choices from today’s innovative designers.
