About the Item

The Contemporary Estriado Bench by Domingos Tótora is a unique and stunning piece of furniture created in Brazil in 2014. The bench is made entirely of recycled cardboard, meticulously crafted into a series of vertical ribbons that are layered and molded to form a smooth, undulating surface. The result is a breathtaking display of texture and depth, with the organic, irregular patterns of the cardboard creating a beautiful contrast against the straight, geometric lines of the bench's form. The bench is not only beautiful, but also functional, with its sturdy construction capable of supporting several people at once. It's a true work of art that showcases the beauty and potential of sustainable design. About the artist: Born and raised in Maria da Fé, a small Southeastern Brazilian town in the Mantiqueira Mountains, Domingos Tótora finds in this habitat of expression and experimentation not only his roots and affective ties, but also his main source of inspiration: nature. Surrounded by the local landscape, the designer works with a surprising raw material, recycled cardboard, to create furniture, objects and sculptural pieces. The beauty of Tótora’s work manifests itself not only in the finished piece, but also in the careful, certified sustainable process through which cardboard, which originated as wood, is essentially brought back full cycle by taking on a wood-like quality again through the careful work of the designer’s hands.

One-of-a-Kind Contemporary Aziza Easy Chair by Hugo França, Brazil 2017

One-of-a-Kind Contemporary Aziza Easy Chair by Hugo França, Brazil 2017

By Hugo França

Located in Deerfield Beach, FL

This lounge chair is an unique piece in pequi wood made in Brazil in 2017, by contemporary designer Hugo França, famous for his sculptural furniture using reclaimed wood and preserving the organic forms of the tree. This piece was originally a canoe manufactured by the Pataxó indigenous people, in south of Bahia, Brazil. In the early 80s, Hugo França abandoned his previous career as an industrial engineer in São Paulo to be closer to nature, moving to Trancoso, Bahia. Witnessing from up-close the rampant destruction of the local Atlantic Forest greatly impacted him, motivating his current work as a designer. França reverences the very trees salvaged by him as his main inspiration; he works intuitively, allowing his creative process to be guided by each tree’s organic...
