About the Item

George Nelson, ‘Coconut’ lounge chair, fiberglass, leather upholstery, steel, United States, design 1955, later production The ‘Coconut’ lounge chair is one of George Nelson’s iconic designs. Nelson took inspiration for this particular shape from a coconut that is cut into piece, hence the name 'Coconut'. This association is further emphasized by the combination of the dark brown leather and the off-white shell. An elegant base of steel legs and connective lines, contributes to the unique character of the chair. George Nelson (1908-1986) was an architect, writer, lecturer and designer who were one of the first to pick up Industrial Design in the United States. Nelson fundamentally questioned the basis of furniture business. Nelson came to work as a designer and director at Herman Miller. Here, Nelson rejected the purely market-oriented type of business model that was predominant in the furniture sector and pleads only to make furniture of which he was completely convinced: the rest would follow. Nelson believed furthermore that the Industrial designer brought together all the arts. His designs are recognized by open shapes, clean lines and modest forms. Kindly note that this item is in good, used condition.
