About the Item

An enduring icon of 20th-century design, this Wassily Chair by Marcel Breuer stands as one of the purest expressions of Bauhaus thinking translated into furniture. Conceived in 1925–26 during Breuer’s time at the Bauhaus, the model revolutionized modern seating through its radical use of tubular steel and suspended leather surfaces. This example is an authentic Italian edition produced by Gavina, widely recognized for bringing Bauhaus masters into refined postwar Italian manufacturing. Executed in chromed tubular steel with black leather sling elements, the chair achieves a striking balance between structural clarity and visual lightness. The frame’s continuous lines articulate space rather than occupy it, while the leather planes float with architectural precision, offering both comfort and sculptural presence. This piece retains its original Gavina label and is signed on the leather, confirming its authenticity and historical importance. The leather is in very good vintage condition, free from tears or structural damage, with only slight tonal fading at the edges consistent with age and use. The chromed steel structure remains solid and well preserved. A conservative restoration can be carried out upon request, aimed solely at preserving the original materials and patina, and can be included in the final price if desired. A true collector’s piece and a cornerstone of modern design history, perfectly suited for refined interiors, design-driven collections, or institutional contexts.
