About the Item

A handsome pair of French giltwood armchairs, featuring generously scaled frames with boldly carved details throughout. Each chair is constructed with a shaped backrest crowned by a carved crest, scrolling arms with rolled terminals, and raised on stout cabriole legs terminating in carved scroll feet. The frames retain their original giltwood finish, now beautifully aged with visible wear, losses, and areas of exposed bole and wood beneath—offering a rich, layered patina that speaks to age and use. The carving remains crisp, with leaf motifs, molded rails, and decorative banding along the seat apron and arms. The chairs are upholstered in a gold-toned damask fabric, likely later, with a classical scrolling pattern that complements the warmth of the gilt frames. Upholstery shows wear consistent with age and could be used as-is for a lived-in, old-world look or updated to suit a more tailored interior.
