About the Item

A beautiful and authentic pair of Hans J. Wegner CH22 lounge chairs, designed in 1950 for Carl Hansen & Søn — one of Wegner’s earliest lounge chair designs and a cornerstone of Danish Modern craftsmanship. Both chairs come from the same original household and present as a thoughtfully matched pair with unique historical character. Crafted in solid oak with Wegner’s characteristic sculpted armrests and elegant, organic backrest, the chairs showcase the designer’s mastery of proportion, joinery, and tactile form. Each chair is newly restored and has new hand-woven paper cord seats, true to the original specification. One chair features an early production burn-mark stamp beneath the arm, indicating its first-generation manufacture. The second chair is an authentic later / 2nd-generation example that originally carried factory stickers, now lost over time — a common occurrence in mid-century Danish seating. Together, they represent the subtle evolution of early CH22 production while maintaining visual harmony as a pair. The wood displays a warm, even tone with beautiful grain movement, and the restoration has been completed with respect for originality and historical integrity — the kind of careful stewardship we value at Hobbs Modern. A rare opportunity to acquire two authentic CH22 chairs from the same provenance — ideal for a reading nook, architectural interior, or Danish Modern collection. Price is for a pair of chairs  About the Designer: “A chair,” according to Danish designer Hans Wegner, “is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all angles.” This principle guided Wegner in the design of every one of the 500 chairs he developed during his lifetime—100 of which were ultimately put into production. But of all these, just one, his 1949 Round Chair, went on to earn the internationally recognized nickname of “The Chair,” an honor shared by no other design before or since” - Anna Carnick  Hans Wegner was an exceptional furniture designer all his life, but between 1949 and 1951 he had an incredible run. Virtually everything he touched turned to gold. In the space of just 24 months, he designed a whole series of furniture pieces that are now icons in Danish Modern and Mid Century Modern Design. This made him an undisputed star of the design scene in Denmark and abroad. During this exceptional productive time period Hans Wenger designed icons including the Round Chair (1949), the Wishbone Chair (1949), the CH-25 (1949), the CH-22 (1950), JH512 Folding Chair (1949) and the Flag Halyard Chair (1950). Included in this list is one of the most glorious and sought after armchair designs of all Danish Modernism design, the Papa Bear (1950-51).   The Icon of Icons -The Papa Bear Chair -was Wegner’s modern take on a classic English wingback chair (believed to have been created in England in the 1600s to help shield from drafts), with its tall back and side panels that extend from each arm. The Papa Bear chair is a modern wingback chair, the ultimate in glorious comfort.  Hans Wegner’s twist was to cut the armrests free from the seat for lightness and ease of movement. The arms were designed with a gap underneath for practical reasons. He wanted to create an armchair you could move your legs around and in: stick them through the sides and not just over the arms but under the arms as well. He understood that people can be restless when sitting. He loved to move around when reading or listening to music. Hans Wenger, along with Finn Juhl, is considered to be the most important Danish designers of the 20th century modernism movement. His iconic designs paired with quality materials, thoughtful shapes, and exacting execution catapulted him to the forefront of Danish modernism. His design aesthetic, dubbed organic functionalism, emphasized functionality paired with beautiful organic form. Today, Wegner’s designs are some of the most sought after pieces of the Mid century modern era. “His early training included both carpentry and architecture, and in the early 1940s he worked for Erik Møller and Arne Jacobsen designing furniture for the Aarhus City Hall, in Aarhus, Denmark, before establishing his own furniture studio. Until the 1960s, Wegner collaborated with cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen to realize his designs” (Source DWR 2020), most notably the gracefully tapered and curved solid-wood chair known as “The Round Chair” which has been called the most beautiful chair in the world. The story goes that Wegner was working with an apprentice and ask him to grab the chair. The apprentice asked which chair? Wegner replied “The Round One over there”
