About the Item

This pair of lounge chairs, attributed to H.P. Berlage for ’t Binnenhuis, dates from around 1900 and reflects the early development of Dutch modern design at the intersection of the Arts & Crafts movement and Nieuwe Kunst. The solid oak frames are defined by their clear architectural structure, with horizontal slat elements and a restrained geometric composition that emphasizes proportion, construction, and material integrity. The chairs have been reupholstered in a neutral textile, allowing the clarity of the design and the warmth of the oak to remain central to their appearance. Their form balances structural rigor with a comfortable and inviting presence, characteristic of seating produced in this transitional period. Hendrik Petrus Berlage was one of the most influential figures in the development of modern architecture and design in the Netherlands. Through his collaboration with ’t Binnenhuis, founded in Amsterdam in 1900, he helped establish a new direction in furniture design rooted in honesty of materials, rational construction, and architectural coherence. While these chairs are not marked, their design shows strong formal and constructional affinities with documented examples attributed to Berlage for ’t Binnenhuis. As such, they can be understood within the broader context of his work and the emergence of a distinctly Dutch approach to early modern design.
