Introducing an incredibly rare early "Ruspan" chair made famous by the influential Canadian designer Russel Spanner in 1950. Constructed from birch and utilizing molded plywood techniques this chair has been painstakingly restored in homage to the late great Spanner. Using his first Ruspan chair model as inspiration, which was painted black and using brown webbing for the seat, we restored this chair piece by piece. The paint is automotive-grade, single-stage polyurethane whilst the full-grain leather has been hand-dyed and cut and applied in exactly the same pattern and spacing as the original chair. Russel Spanner was a Canadian designer who contributed to residential furniture designs throughout the 50's and 60's. Spanner's designs utilized innovative manufacturing techniques such as curved plywood and non-upholstered, woven-web seating which are on full display in this restored Ruspan chair. Spanner was obsessive about the process of building his pieces and was famous (or infamous) for testing the strength of his designs by jumping on them and throwing them across the factory floor. With it's aggressive stance, lavish use of new materials and contrasting colors this iconic Ruspan chair is perfect for collectors and designers alike searching for an authentic Spanner piece that is as rich in aesthetics as it is in Modern Design history. The seat, redone in hand-cut genuine leather hide, has been woven and cut to the same size and pattern as the original straps.
