About the Item

This iconic string chair by American artist and designer Allan Gould (1908-1988) is an exploration of line, shape and texture. Like thread upon a loom, the seat and back are formed of one continuous length of twisted hemp rope, strung across an enameled iron frame to create tension and strength. These interlocking lines combine to form a solid visual plane that adds to the angular geometry of the modern silhouette. The roping contrasts the black frame with off-white color and a softness that recalls traditional upholstery. An original example from the 1950s, this string chair has minor wear consistent with age but remains in excellent condition. Additional Dimensions: Seat: 12"H
