About the Item

Linde Freya Tangelder Soft Corners Poufs For Cassina The first Cassina project by Dutch designer Linde Freya Tangelder focuses on functionality through the fresh, dynamic combination of padded shapes, to be used as versatile interior design elements. Soft blocks, joined as in an embrace, lend form to three types of design accessories. Rectangular, low rectangular and an L-shaped square, each one has a structural wood core encased in soft upholstered foam rubber parts. In contrast to the soft, padded shapes of the design ottomans, the collection is completed by an industrial style stainless-steel coffee table composed of three pieces welded together. STRUCTURE In plywood. CUSHIONS In polyurethane with a percentage of polyols deriving from biological sources. UPHOLSTERY In fabric or leather from the Cassina Collections. A playful interlocking of shapes is the key to the first Cassina project by this Dutch designer. Soft Corners is a Tetris puzzle of soft shapes designed for versatility and functionality. Three types of ottomans – rectangular, low rectangular and an L-shaped square – can be easily assembled and adapted to any room in the home. From the living room to the bedroom, they offer seating, footrests or other options of use. Encapsulated in a basic geometric shape, these ottomans express energy and fresh insight through simple, multifunctional interlocking modules. Soft Corners is a product of the experimental work of Linde Freya Tangelder during her IN Residence experience in Turin, Italy. Thanks to the cultural support of Cassina, consistently committed to promoting shows and cultural initiatives, the designer had the opportunity to investigate the relationship between limited-edition collection design and larger-scale furniture production, and to craft a project perfectly balanced between the two. Revisiting a practice that was the true driver of Italian art during the Renaissance period, the Cassina Research and Development Centre – through this partnership – launched the Patronage project with the aim of pursuing innovative ideas and exploring new materials and production processes while supporting young talent. A commitment to innovation and excellence, in keeping with the Cassina DNA. Each Soft Corners piece has a structural wood core encased in upholstered foam rubber parts. An easy attachment system means all the components can be disassembled for repair or replacement as needed, in keeping with the Cassina LAB philosophy. The wood structure is made of black plywood, the cushions in plant-based polyurethane. Fabric or leather upholstery can be selected from the Cassina Collections. In contrast to the soft, padded shapes, an industrial style stainless-steel coffee table rounds out the collection. Linde Freya Tangelder, founder of the studio, strives for sensory relevance and cultural value in detail and on a larger scale. The works have a sculptural and architectural character, and balance between contemporary and traditional elements. Inspired by architectural shapes, the furniture pieces highlight the field between industry and human, through diverse materials. Constructions are scaled down to human sizes, and translations result into sculptural gestures. Both low and high end materials get re-valued, reconsidered and transformed. The interventions and finishes by hand, give these architectural objects a tactile aspect. The contrast in materials, the touchability, and the human traces that are still visible in the object, explain the method of Destroyers/Builders. The urge to situate the works in a spatial context, in which the specific architectural space will start a dialogue with the objects therein, is a main focus of the studio. Integrations and relations between the context and the work, whether it is a sculpture, a furniture piece or an architectural fragment, result into inseparable connections between the disciplines. Destroyers/Builders takes on projects that range from commissions to self-initiated projects, and extend across the realms of both architectural furniture and interior projects. The practice was founded in 2014 and is Antwerp based. About The Manufacture: Established in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, Italy, Cassina launched industrial design in Italy in the 1950s, based on a totally innovative approach that marked the transition from artisan production to mass production. With a mindset focused on research and innovation, Cassina combines technology and long-standing artisan craftsmanship.
