About the Item

A playful and highly decorative vintage Moroccan round pouf or ottoman, upholstered in a bold 1970s-style psychedelic floral textile in warm shades of chocolate brown, burnt orange, raspberry red and creamy ivory. The exuberant upholstery is what gives this compact piece its distinctive personality. Oversized stylized flowers, scrolling vines, circular motifs and graphic leaves sweep continuously around the cylindrical body and across the upholstered top, creating an energetic pattern characteristic of the adventurous interiors and textile design of the 1970s. The fabric combines areas of cut-velvet texture with smoother satin-like woven surfaces, giving the floral design additional dimension as it catches the light. A neatly piped edge defines the circular top and emphasizes the clean cylindrical silhouette. Measuring 18 inches in diameter × 18 inches high, the pouf has particularly useful proportions. At standard occasional-seat height, it works beautifully as a small upholstered stool, footstool, vanity seat, bedside accent or pull-up occasional seating. At approximately 10 pounds, it is also relatively lightweight and can easily be repositioned wherever additional seating is needed. The uncomplicated round form allows the vibrant textile to become the focal point. Its combination of saturated color and graphic pattern works particularly well within Maximalist, Bohemian, Moroccan, 1970s Modern, Hollywood Regency and eclectic contemporary interiors. It could equally provide an unexpected shot of pattern and color within an otherwise restrained modern room. Several examples are available, making these poufs especially attractive for designers. A single piece provides a compact decorative accent, while a pair can be positioned beneath a console or opposite lounge chairs. Three or four grouped around a low cocktail table would create an informal conversation area with considerably greater visual impact. Their compact scale also makes them practical for apartments, dressing rooms, bedrooms and other spaces where flexible occasional seating is desirable. The combination of a simple Modernist cylindrical silhouette and exuberant floral upholstery gives this Moroccan pouf the kind of 1970s decorative character currently sought for layered, collected interiors. The textile has a visual affinity with the period's Italian and European psychedelic floral fabrics without needing to attribute the design to a particular textile house or designer.
