About the Item

Patinated Cognac Leather Sgarsul Rocking Chair, Gae Aulenti for Poltronova, Italy 1962 Iconic Sgarsul rocking chair designed by Gae Aulenti and manufactured by Poltronova in Italy in 1962. This chair is a striking example of radical Italian design, combining sculptural elegance with refined comfort. Its curving frame, crafted in bent plywood with a black lacquer finish, creates a bold and modern silhouette while paying homage to earlier rocking chair traditions. The seat is upholstered in its original cognac leather, which has aged beautifully and shows only minor traces of use, consistent with careful vintage preservation. The warm patina enhances the chair’s authenticity, making it a rare and desirable piece for collectors. The name Sgarsul derives from the Neapolitan dialect meaning “street urchin,” reflecting both playfulness and subversive character. Aulenti’s design reinterprets Thonet’s 1862 Rocking Chair No. 1, replacing beechwood with modern bentwood construction and refining the silhouette with fluid, drop-shaped curves. Her reimagined version minimizes stitching through a pouch-like sling seat, emphasizing both comfort and clean lines. What makes the Sgarsul so compelling is how it bridges industrial manufacturing with artisanal craftsmanship, blending tradition and innovation seamlessly. At the time of its creation, Aulenti was in her early thirties and beginning to establish her career, later becoming one of Italy’s most influential architects and designers. Produced by the Tuscan firm Poltronova, under the artistic direction of Ettore Sottsass, this piece exemplifies the company’s commitment to experimentation and design excellence. Dimensions: Height: 85 cm (33.46 in.) Width: 73 cm (28.74 in.) Depth: 110 cm (43.31 in.) A sculptural yet functional masterpiece, this chair embodies the creative spirit of 1960s Italian design and remains a highly collectible example of Gae Aulenti’s visionary work.

The "Sgarsul" rocking chair is a reinterpretation of Thonet's 1862 N1 cantilever armchair by Gae Aulenti, a leading architect and designer of Italian design.
