About the Item

An antique carved Victorian settee in the Rococo Revival taste, circa 1860–1890, a medallion-back parlor seat crowned by a pierced crest of full-blown roses, smaller five-petalled blossoms, and open C-scrolls, worked through the wood so light passes behind the cresting. The same carved vocabulary returns in a cartouche at the center of the seat rail and in the foliate terminals of the open scrolled arms. The cabriole front legs ride on brass cup casters; the rear legs are plain and raked. The hardwood frame was never stripped or refinished: it was cleaned and a light stain was applied to refresh the tone, keeping the original surface with the carving and the wear of age legible. The seating was taken back to the frame and fully reupholstered in a Temperley London x Romo bouclé (pattern Lulu, colour Deep River), a wool-blend weave in saturated river-blue with copper-toned glints, rated to 25,000 Martindale rubs and specified for heavy domestic upholstery; the oval back is deep button-tufted. Disclosed in good faith: the frame shows age-appropriate wear, surface abrasion to the legs and minor checking to the show-wood at the front. No maker's mark was located; the settee is unattributed, and as this form was produced in several countries, the manufacture origin is not established. Its documented recent history begins with its purchase through a New Hampshire auction house. Measures 42½ W by 22 D by 45 H inches; seat height 16½ inches.
