About the Item

An exceptional late 19th-century Egyptian Moorish folding chair, circa 1880, finely hand-carved in dark wood and embellished with delicate mother-of-pearl and shell inlay. With its dramatic silhouette, intricate surface decoration and beautifully aged patina, the chair is a distinctive example of 19th-century Egyptian Islamic decorative arts and furniture. The tall, sculptural back is constructed from a series of slender carved wooden members that create an elegant, almost architectural rhythm. The wood is extensively decorated with finely worked foliate, geometric and arabesque motifs, punctuated throughout by small mother-of-pearl inlays arranged as stars, rosettes and circular accents. The elaborate crest is particularly striking. Its pierced and carved composition incorporates traditional Islamic geometric ornament and Arabic calligraphic decoration, giving the chair a strong visual connection to the decorative vocabulary of Egypt and the wider Middle East during the late Ottoman period. The seat and folding X-form base continue the same detailed carving and inlay, making the chair visually compelling from top to bottom. Rather than functioning simply as seating, the piece has the presence of a sculptural collector's object. Folding chairs of this type were produced within the sophisticated tradition of Egyptian Islamic revival furniture that became particularly desirable during the second half of the 19th century, when European and international collectors developed a strong interest in Egyptian, Moorish and Middle Eastern decorative arts. The chair retains a rich, naturally aged surface with variations in color and patina that emphasize its handmade character and considerable age. Some of the original mother-of-pearl inlay is missing, along with other minor age-related losses and wear, all visible in the photographs. These characteristics are consistent with an authentic antique of this period and have not been disguised through excessive restoration. Its unusually tall 41-inch back gives the chair a commanding silhouette despite its relatively narrow 18-inch width. It works particularly well as an accent chair or sculptural decorative object in a collected Mediterranean, Moorish, Spanish Revival, Middle Eastern, eclectic or contemporary interior. A compelling piece for collectors of 19th-century Egyptian furniture, Islamic art, mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture and Moorish decorative arts. Dimensions: 41 in. H × 18 in. W × 24 in.
