About the Item

Of masculine form and proportions, this fine Georgian period side chair features a fully developed vasiform splat with intricate displays of carved foliage sprouting from the tips of the pierced splat ventricles, these rising in a dramatic outward splay from the lower bowl decorated with pierced bear claws around an ovular center. The splay is raised on a stepped plinth surrounded by a gadroon-molded shoe. The trapezoidal seat displays beautifully with it’s serpentine front rail, the thick green leather covering affixed with brass tacks around the lower edge over marlborough front legs. A box stretcher locks the squared front legs into the backswept rear legs, these a single stretch of mahogany from the tip of the back toe through the tip of the stile. Instead of using webbing, the upholsterer used a piece of conforming plywood, probably to lend strength to the frame. To compliment this, the upholsterer used a generous amount of stuffing and a padded undercover (visible along the edges of the nailed leather); as such, the chair remains very comfortable and accommodating, even for long periods of sitting and working. An ideal piece to use as a desk chair, it was intended to be functional and enjoyable and remains so to this day. Finely designed and crisply executed, it is a very striking and pure object for the traditional interior. Measurements: 38 1/4” H x 22 1/4” W (at front legs) x 21 3/4” D x 18 1/2” H to seat. Condition report: Old repaired cracks to shoulders of crest, repair to upper left of splat. Early refinish with surface variation. Leather seat upholstery with age appropriate wear and scratches, some rather deep. Plywood used instead of webbing when reupholstered. Medial stretcher reglued where it dovetails into the sides.
