About the Item

You are looking at the 20th-century “great-great granddaughter” of the classic ballroom chair. This specific design by Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi originated in 1807, about the time that “Bridgerton” takes place—think evenings of candlelight and the rustle of silk. Then, numerous lightweight chairs like this would have been set about for a ball. Strategically placed by liveried footmen along the walls in the great house’s ballroom and in the galleries above, these chairs provided extra seating for the comfort of guests sitting out a Quadrille (perhaps flirting as well as observing). And, as such, these chairs made it all the easier for delectable gossiping. This elegant version is a Chiavari chair, specifically a vintage Italian model often referred to as the Parisienne or Parigina—denoting a connection to France. These chairs are renowned for their lightweight yet sturdy construction and sophisticated design, which originated in the Italian town of Chiavari in the early 19th century. Resurrected as a modern classic during the mid-20th century, the ballroom chair became particularly popular for elegant gala fundraisers and weddings. Today, top the fine rattan seat of this one with a tie-on velvet pad and place it at your writing desk or dressing table. Don’t you need a little candlelight and silk in your life?
