About the Item

Three-seat Cornaro 220 sofa designed by Carlo Scarpa for Simon Gavina and introduced in 1974 as part of the Ultrarazionale collection. The design is distinguished by the relationship between the solid iroko wood frame and the generous upholstered volumes it contains. Rather than concealing the structure, Scarpa makes it an integral part of the composition: the continuous wooden frame defines the perimeter of the sofa, creating a dialogue between architectural rigor and the softness of the cushions. Upholstered in original velvet, this example retains the strong sculptural presence that characterizes the model while emphasizing the material qualities central to Scarpa’s work. The Cornaro reflects the designer’s longstanding interest in construction, proportion and craftsmanship, translated here into a piece that is both architectural and domestic in scale. One coffee stain on the velvet. Italy, 1974. Bibliography: Dino Gavina. Ultrarazionale Ultramobile, Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, 1998, exhibition catalogue, pp. 132–133. Giuliana Gramigna, Repertorio del Design Italiano per l'Arredamento Domestico 1950–2000, Umberto Allemandi & C., Turin, 2003, p. 211.
