About the Item

Søren Willadsen was a Danish cabinetmaker and manufacturer active during the early and mid-twentieth century, known for producing furniture that reflected the emerging principles of Danish modern design. Working from his workshop in Vejen, Willadsen collaborated with designers while also producing pieces that emphasised craftsmanship, careful proportions, and the thoughtful use of natural materials. Danish furniture from the 1940s often balanced traditional cabinetmaking techniques with modern forms, creating pieces that were both refined and comfortable while maintaining a clear structure. This curved two-seater sofa reflects that transitional moment through its restrained yet sculptural form. The most defining feature is the gently curved backrest that runs continuously from one side of the sofa to the other. Rather than forming separate arms, the back curves around the seating area, creating a protective and enveloping shape. The wooden frame that runs along the whole back side, introduces a warm material contrast against the soft textile surface. This wooden structure not only supports the upholstered body but also gives the sofa a clear outline that defines its silhouette. The upholstery is a light, soft mohair that highlights the smooth curvature of the structure while the subtle button tufting along the backrest adds rhythm and depth. The rounded wooden legs reinforce this visual softness while providing a stable base that lifts the sofa slightly above the floor. The proportions are compact yet inviting, making the sofa well suited to smaller living spaces while still offering comfortable seating for two people. Through its combination of curved frame, upholstery, and exposed wood, this sofa illustrates the quiet elegance that characterises Danish furniture from the 1940s. The design reflects a period when traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics were beginning to merge, producing pieces that remain both functional and visually captivating.
