About the Item

An icon of American modernism and one of the most refined seating designs of the 20th century, this is the celebrated Eames Three-Seat Sofa designed by Ray and Charles Eames for Herman Miller. Upholstered in rich black leather with a sculptural walnut case and elegant aluminum base, this example dates to 2002 and bears the black Herman Miller label, confirming its authenticity. The three-seat configuration is widely regarded as the most desirable and classic expression of the design, offering both visual balance and generous comfort. This sofa represents a pivotal moment in design history, as it is recognized as Charles Eames’ final furniture design, completed shortly before his passing. The piece reflects the Eames philosophy at its most mature, where innovation, comfort, and architectural clarity converge. The padded armrests, supportive cushions, and carefully engineered proportions make it exceptionally comfortable, while the crisp wood case construction gives it a strong architectural presence. Unlike many upholstered sofas, this design features a fully finished back, allowing it to float beautifully within a room. It functions as confidently in the center of a space as it does against a wall, making it ideal for executive and management offices, hotel lobbies, members’ clubs, creative studios, libraries, and refined residential interiors. Its construction and visual language align it closely with other important wood-cased modern sofas, such as designs by Milo Baughman and Warren Platner for Lehigh-Leopold, yet the Eames sofa stands apart for its precision, legacy, and timeless restraint. The combination of black leather, walnut, and aluminum places this sofa squarely within the canon of Mid-Century Modern design, while its clean lines and tailored presence allow it to transition effortlessly into Contemporary, Modernist, Postmodern, and even Transitional interiors. It works equally well in a corporate setting or a sophisticated living room, offering gravitas without heaviness and comfort without excess. While two-seat loveseat versions were produced, the three-seat sofa is the definitive configuration, especially in walnut with black leather, making this example particularly desirable among collectors, designers, and Eames enthusiasts. This is a piece that does not chase trends; it anchors a space with quiet authority and enduring relevance. A true design classic, museum-referenced, architecturally resolved, and endlessly livable, this Eames sofa is as much a statement of taste as it is an investment in one of the most important legacies in modern design.
