About the Item

An elegant and increasingly rare three-seat sofa designed by Frits Henningsen and crafted in Denmark during the late 1930s or early 1940s. The design embodies Henningsen's celebrated synthesis of traditional cabinetmaking and understated Danish Modernism. The sculptural mahogany frame is distinguished by its gracefully curved arms, refined proportions and beautifully tapered legs, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship for which Henningsen is renowned. The sofa possesses a remarkable sense of balance and restraint, reflecting the influence of the finest Copenhagen cabinetmaking traditions. Recently reupholstered by skilled Danish craftsmen, with great care taken to preserve the original upholstery construction. The original copper coil springs and traditional padding have been retained, ensuring both authenticity and comfort while respecting the integrity of the original design. The sofa is upholstered in a premium navy-blue worsted wool fabric by Danish Art Weaving. Renowned for its exceptional quality, durability and refined texture, the fabric complements the warm tones of the mahogany while lending the piece a sophisticated and contemporary character. The mahogany frame has been carefully cleaned and preserved, retaining a rich patina acquired through decades of use. The result is a beautifully presented example that balances restoration with authenticity. According to family history, the sofa descended through the family of Karen Blixen's cousin's daughter and remained within the family for many years. While this provenance is not documented, it forms part of the known ownership history accompanying the piece.
