About the Item

The term Swedish Modern first became current in the 1930s, when modern Swedish design was becoming increasingly well known in Europe and the United States. However, it was at its height in the 1950s and was characterised by many of the qualities of Modernism blended with natural materials - such as wood - and a Scandinavian respect for elevated craftsmanship. This sofa has a lot of character with a welcoming presence that exudes high quality craftsmanship and design. The rounded edges and curves create flowing lines, which are further enhanced by the upholstery’s rich texture and softness. While the body embraces the sitter, the edges curve outwards creating a rim along the back and arms. This curve continues along the bottom of the seat as well, framing the seating cushion visually. Thanks to the interesting and stylish fabric, the upholstery can be considered the main decorative element, with its light colour highlighting the sofa’s curves. The thin tapered legs splay outwards, following the form of the sofa and providing stability and a stylish contrast to the upholstery. With its cosy aesthetic and material quality, this sofa is truly soulful and timeless. In the absence of any ornamentation, the focus stays on the simple and clean look, supported by the sofa’s functionality and comfort. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Sweden contributed to the progression of form and function in its own way, based on long-standing traditions, natural resources, and the critical - yet often coincidental - availability of creative genius. Folke Jansson was certainly one of the latter, designing unique forms with an artistic touch. Jansson is a designer who is difficult to define, being the creator of daily objects which are far from the organic forms of Alvar Aalto, and yet not aiming for the minimalism of Arne Jacobsen or Poul Kjaerholm. His experimentation has led him to play both with the free forms embedded into materials, and with the geometric shapes superimposed on them. This ‘Orion’ sofa...

Leif Hansen "Model 62" Sofa for Kronen Møbelfabrikken, Denmark, 1960s

By Kronen, Leif Hansen

Located in Utrecht, NL

Leif Hansen’s Model 62 sofa is commonly referred to as the “Geisha” and was designed in 1959. This model is a strikingly elegant example of Danish modernism’s streamlined, luxurious aesthetic appeal to contemporary eyes. This three-seater sofa is made of two types of exotic woods and dressed in a premium light fabric. Its character is created by three main elements: the visually sectioned, fully upholstered body, the wooden accents on the arms, and the distinctively shaped legs. It says a lot when a model is representative not only of a designer, but also of a manufactory. So is the case with this Geisha sofa...
