About the Item

A highly sculptural Brutalist stool by Aranjou, France, dating from circa the 1960s. Crafted from solid elm wood with a rich dark-stained finish, the stool is characterized by its primitive construction, organic silhouette and beautifully aged patina. The substantial solid elm seat has an irregular, softly faceted form with rounded edges, emphasizing the natural grain and character of the timber. Three substantial splayed legs are directly joined to the seat, creating a remarkably simple yet highly architectural construction. Particularly attractive is the subtle organic curvature of the legs. Their slightly irregular, hand-shaped appearance gives the stool a strong sculptural presence from every angle. The solid elm displays a deep, warm coloration with pronounced grain, knots and natural variations. Decades of use have created a rich surface patina with traces of wear that enhance rather than detract from its authentic Brutalist character. The stool is representative of the French postwar tradition of Brutalist and primitive modern furniture, in which traditional craftsmanship, substantial natural materials and radically simplified forms were combined to create highly expressive functional objects. With its compact proportions and strong architectural silhouette, the piece can function as a stool, occasional seat, bedside piece, pedestal or sculptural side table. A characterful and increasingly collectible example of French Brutalist furniture by Aranjou, retaining a particularly attractive aged surface.
