About the Item

“Berga” Stool by David Rosén for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, 1940s An iconic “Berga” stool designed by David Rosén and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Stockholm during the 1940s. This piece is a fine and well-preserved example of Swedish Sportstuga furniture, characterised by its honest use of material, robust construction, and restrained yet expressive detailing. The stool’s clear architectural structure and emphasis on joinery reflect Rosén’s background as a trained cabinetmaker, evident in the carefully executed joinery work and the sculptural articulation of the legs and seat supports. Due to its minimalist and material-driven expression, the model has previously been attributed to Axel Einar Hjorth, who was designing for Nordiska Kompaniet during the same period. Current attribution places the design with David Rosén. The solid Swedish pine displays a beautifully developed patina with a warm, natural glow, highlighting the quality of the old-growth timber and the clarity of the grain. The surface has recently received a careful application of oil, enhancing depth while respecting the original character of the wood. A sculptural and highly collectible stool, equally suited as seating or as an occasional piece, and a strong representative of Swedish functional design from the 1940s.
