About the Item

Japanese Primitive Wooden Step Stool Japan, circa 1900–1930 A beautifully weathered Japanese wooden step stool displaying decades of honest use. Constructed from solid wood with gently tapered sides, the stool features a circular hand hole that allows for easy carrying while adding a strong sculptural presence. Layers of dark lacquer have gradually worn away over time, exposing the warm wood beneath and creating an expressive surface impossible to replicate. Originally made as an everyday household object, its understated proportions and utilitarian construction embody the quiet beauty found in traditional Japanese vernacular design. The softened edges, worn finish, and subtle imperfections speak to a long life of practical use. Today, the piece functions equally well as a step stool, seating stool, side table, display pedestal, or sculptural object within both contemporary and wabi-sabi interiors. Beautiful age-related patina throughout. Wear consistent with age and use.
