About the Item

Spectacular pair of Swedish Baroque ottomans or footstools in carved and polychrome wood, original 18th century pieces. Both have a simple structure, with a circular profile and four slightly galvanized legs topped with cushions. The carved ornamentation is also simple, with subtle geometric shapes outlined in gold. Upholstered in damask in shades of purple on a natural background. The Swedish Baroque (c. 1650-1715) was a style driven by the rise of the Swedish Empire, characterized by monumental yet austere architecture, influenced by Roman and French models. The furniture is characterized by the use of local wood, especially pine, often with an authentic patina or painted finishes that reflect a more rustic and functional taste than the Baroque style of Southern Europe. In general, it adapted European opulence, particularly French and Italian, to a more sober and robust style. Influenced by the Louis XIV style, it reflected power and wealth. Sweden developed its own interpretation, less ornate than its continental European counterpart, prioritizing functionality without sacrificing elegance.
