It's a trial run and a masterstroke. For his first round in the design ring, 34-year-old Tam Sachs lands a winning uppercut. With Rockstool, this young Parisian offers comfortable, playful, and poetic trompe-l'oeil rocks. Each seat is unique, its tension revealing high-end craftsmanship. Behind the pseudonym Tam Sachs lies master upholsterer Sacha Simon. Heir to the Parisian workshop Annie Simon Tapissier, he shines with the launch of his brand, a creative alter ego to watch closely.
Spontaneous creation
"I wanted to make a sofa for myself. I first thought of a cloud shape, for its cocooning aspect, but as I was making it, something more acute appeared. Then one evening on the road, I saw a rock. It was obvious: this was the minerality I was looking for," says Sacha Simon. At first, his friends thought he was a little crazy, until they saw the first prototypes come out of the workshop, which also caught the eye of gallery owner David Boullier-Masolini. Together, they refined the concept and laid the foundations for a brand.
To distinguish his new activity as a designer from his craftsmanship, Sacha Simon invented the pseudonym Tam Sachs, a dyslexic anagram of his name, which allowed him to envisage his future in two different roles.
The Rockstool adventure began.
Haute couture manufacturing
Each Rockstool stool is a unique piece, manufactured in the Annie Simon workshops in the heart of Paris's 16th arrondissement. To give the seat its unique shape, the foam is carved like a sculpture around a wooden core. The comfort and softness of the final product are enhanced by the choice of a bouclé-style fabric, into which the hidden seams are blended, giving the final product its tension and distinguishing the expertise of the Annie Simon workshops.
All Rockstool seats are signed and numbered.
4 types: Rockstool offers four types of seating: stool (rockstool), armchair (rockchair), sofa (rocksofa), and ottoman (otto).
2 sizes: Rockstools are available in two sizes, M and L.
17 colors: from pebble gray to porcelain white, with variations from ochre to rust and even magnetic blue, Rockstool offers a range of 17 colors to perfectly coordinate your choice of rock with the atmosphere of your interior.
Sacha Nataf lived for and through music for many years. It was for music that he decided to leave school at the age of 14. His father agreed on the condition that he learn the upholsterer's trade. With his CAP (vocational training certificate) in hand, Sacha became a DJ and set Parisian dancefloors alight with his house and hip-hop sounds.
But at the age of 29, duty called him back to his father's workshop. Following the death of one of the craftsmen, he had to step in to support the Annie Simon team at short notice. Initially three days a week, then, caught up in the game, full time.
Caught up in his passion for needlework, Sacha became an expert in restoration. Beyond classic furniture, it was working on designer creations that stimulated him the most. Working on pieces as spectacular as Giancarlo Piretti's 13-module sofa determined his desire to innovate.
Now at the helm of Ateliers Annie Simon, he has taken on the name Tam Sachs to give free rein to his creativity and, at the same time as launching his first seats, has launched the Rockstool brand.
