About the Item

Cathedral Yew Comb Back Handcrafted in England, this sculptural Comb Back Windsor chair is a unique contemporary interpretation of the traditional English Windsor form. Created as a one-off piece, the chair is distinguished by its extraordinarily rare single-piece yew seat and matching yew comb, selected for their exceptional figure, warmth, and natural character. Finding yew of sufficient scale for a solid Windsor seat is exceptionally uncommon, making this chair as much a collectible work of functional art as it is a piece of furniture. The richly figured golden yew is contrasted by bright steam-bent ash elements and elegant dark oak turnings, creating a composition that feels both rooted in English craft tradition and distinctly sculptural in presence. Inspired by the ancient yew trees found in old churchyards and rural cathedral grounds throughout England, the chair intentionally retains subtle knots, natural fissures, and organic markings within the timber. Rather than being removed, these features have been carefully preserved to celebrate the age, individuality, and material honesty of the wood. While highly sculptural in form, the chair was made with comfort as a central consideration.
