About the Item

Rare Child's Windsor Armchair. Made predominantly of yew wood and ash with a figured elm seat. Simple turned legs over "Crinoline" shaped stretchers. Beautiful color and a deep patina. Made in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820. A rare and exceptionally well-preserved child's Windsor armchair, crafted in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820. This charming and finely scaled example exemplifies early 19th-century English vernacular design, made predominantly of richly figured yew wood and ash, with a beautifully grained elmwood seat carved from a single plank. The hooped back is flanked by hand-turned spindles, flowing gracefully into shaped arms supported by balustar-turned arm supports. The seat is deeply sculpted and retains a warm, timeworn patina, showcasing the natural beauty of the elm. Below, simple turned legs are joined by an elegant crinoline stretcher- a particularly desirable detail in children's Windsor chairs, lending both strength and distinctive character! Lightweight and enduringly practical, this rare child's armchair embodies the regional craftsmanship of early 19th-century Buckinghamshire, where the Windsor form flourished. Its scale, color, and authenticity make it a highly collectible piece for connoisseurs of English country furniture.
