About the Item

Designed and produced by Fritz Hansen, rare and exceptional pair of wingback lounge chairs or armchairs model 1582 in beech and sheepskin upholstery, Denmark, 1930s. The tall winged backrests envelop the sitter, creating a striking silhouette that is both sculptural and remarkably comfortable. The chairs are distinguished by beautifully hand-sculpted solid beech armrests that gently sweep outward before terminating in elegantly rounded hand grips—an extraordinary detail showcasing the exceptional cabinetmaking for which Fritz Hansen became renowned. The legs consist of sturdy front block legs balanced by subtly tapered rear saber legs, lending the design both visual lightness and structural integrity. This exquisite pair of lounge chairs embodies the refined craftsmanship and restrained elegance that define the earliest period of Danish Modern design. Created in Denmark during the 1930s, these generously proportioned lounge chairs possess a commanding architectural presence while maintaining an inviting softness through their graceful lines and luxurious long haired sheepskin upholstery. With their large scale, beautifully carved woodwork, and timeless silhouette, these early Fritz Hansen wingback chairs are among the finest examples of pre-war Scandinavian Modern seating. Equally suited to sophisticated contemporary interiors and important design collections, they represent a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic and highly collectible pair from one of Denmark's most celebrated furniture manufacturers. Adding to their desirability, this distinguished pair comes from the celebrated Château de Gourdon collection in the South of France, one of the world's most renowned private collections of twentieth-century decorative arts and design. The château has long been recognized for housing an extraordinary assemblage of important works by the foremost designers of the twentieth century, making furniture with this provenance especially sought after by collectors. Price is for the pair. Provenance: Private Collection from Château de Gourdon, France
