About the Item

Very Fine Late 18th-Century George III Mahogany Library Bookcase *In the manner of Gillows of Lancaster – English, circa 1780* An exceptional late 18th-century George III solid mahogany library bookcase, crafted in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster and beautifully uniting refined design with superb practical storage. The upper section is surmounted by a crisply moulded, finely shaped cornice. Below, a pair of elegant glazed doors, retaining their original brass escutcheons, key and working lock, open to reveal four adjustable shelves, ideal for the display of books, porcelain, or treasured collections. The doors are neatly framed with refined mouldings that continue down through the lower section, lending the whole piece a strong, architectural presence. The base is fitted with a pair of well figured mahogany moulded cupboard doors, opening to an interior with an adjustable shelf that offers generous additional storage. The bookcase stands on its original carved square moulded feet and retains its original panelled oak backboards, a further testament to its authenticity and quality. Made in England circa 1780, this distinguished piece displays a wonderful, rich mahogany colour and a warm, mellow patina developed over more than two centuries. The surfaces, proportions and details are all in superb original condition, reflecting both the skill of the Georgian cabinetmaker and the careful stewardship it has enjoyed. A very fine example of Georgian library furniture in the manner of Gillows, this bookcase combines exceptional craftsmanship, elegance and practicality. It would make a superb focal point in a drawing room, library or study, and is an ideal choice for any refined interior seeking a genuine period statement piece of outstanding quality.
