About the Item

An 18th-century folding sideboard made during the (late) Dutch Louis XVI period, circa 1790–1800. The folding sideboard is constructed from oak and mahogany, veneered with, amongst other things, satin maple, water-stained maple and mahogany. In addition, there is a variety of details and mouldings in Bahia rosewood, ebony, palisander, amaranth, boxwood and/or holly. The front is decorated with two narrow and one wide lacquered panels featuring Oriental figures, buildings and landscapes. The long surfaces on the diagonal side posts are finished in black lacquer, whilst the other surfaces are veneered with ebony. The lacquered panels display the expected craquelure and a worn appearance. Two glass/plate racks are incorporated into the fold-out top. The drawers on either side can be pulled out to extend the worktop. The dovetail-jointed drawers have sliding mahogany lids, beneath which is a green-upholstered compartment for storing cutlery, napkin rings, candles, etc. Behind the central door, which pivots on its original hinges, there is a single shelf. The folding sideboard rests on square, tapered legs with a fluted section at the top and a brass ball finial at the bottom. The brass (oval) keyholes on the door and drawers are decorated with, amongst other things, beaded edges, bows and garlands. The locks are original and have a working key. The solid oak back panel is secured with hand-forged square nails. Scattered throughout the piece are old, well-executed restorations to the veneer and the expected, unobtrusive signs of wear in keeping with its age. The entire folding sideboard boasts beautiful, warm contrasting colours and a lovely satin sheen, and is a real asset to any interior!
