About the Item

J.A.D.A Galerie presents: An oak buffet built in France in the 1940s, from the generation of workshops that carried the Art Deco vocabulary into the postwar years with plainer means and heavier proportions. Solid oak throughout, left in a natural finish that keeps the open grain legible. The two outer doors are cut in horizontal courses, each course rising and falling in a shallow ripple so that light breaks across them differently through the day. The narrower centre door answers with vertical flutes, a straight reading against the movement on either side. Small square escutcheons in dark metal mark the three locks. The top is a slab of dark marble, veined in cream and rust, set within a moulded oak edge that runs the full width. The case is raised on short tapered legs, which lifts the mass and keeps the front from reading as a block. It works against a long dining room wall, or in a hallway where the marble carries whatever is set down on it.
